A Ray of Hope: The Power of Truth and Reconciliation in Fiji

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, describes the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as a beacon of hope aimed at uncovering the truth and fostering reconciliation for a more equitable, peaceful, and prosperous future.

During the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Workshop, Kamikamica emphasized that the Coalition Government has been a strong advocate for establishing the TRC to critically examine the troubling events of 1987, 2000, and 2006, ensuring that such occurrences do not happen again.

He clarified that the TRC process is not intended to allocate blame or fuel division, but rather to recognize past wrongs and offer a platform for those affected to be heard and acknowledged. Kamikamica highlighted the importance of learning from history to avoid repeating past mistakes, which he believes is essential for building stability and true democracy.

“The TRC serves as a significant tool for confronting the remnants of conflict, injustice, and human rights abuses. It offers a structured avenue for truth-telling, healing, and reconciliation,” he stated.

Kamikamica noted that through public hearings, investigations, and reports, the TRC aims to illuminate dark periods in Fiji’s history by amplifying the voices of those who have endured suffering.

He acknowledged the challenges the TRC faces, particularly from those who may resist the truth or desire to maintain existing power dynamics, stressing the need for support and cooperation across all walks of society—including the government, civil organizations, and the general public.

The Acting Prime Minister remarked that the success of the TRC is not assured and hinges on the commitment from all parties to partake in the process with sincerity, transparency, and a readiness for change.

“It is vital for the Commission to maintain independence, impartiality, and freedom from political influence. It also necessitates a sincere dedication to justice, human rights, and progress,” he said.

Kamikamica concluded by urging Fijians to collaboratively ensure that the TRC process transcends mere symbolism, becoming a significant step toward justice, healing, and peace. He emphasized that this initiative is not only about confronting past issues but also about shaping a brighter future.
