The Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, has described the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as a beacon of hope, aimed at uncovering truths and fostering reconciliation for a more equitable, peaceful, and prosperous future.

During his address at the TRC Workshop, Kamikamica emphasized that the Coalition Government has been advocating for the establishment of the TRC since its inception, focusing on reflecting on the tumultuous periods of 1987, 2000, and 2006 to ensure such events do not recur.

He noted that the initiative is not about assigning blame or inciting division, but rather about acknowledging past wrongs and providing a platform for the victims to be heard and recognized.

Kamikamica stressed the importance of learning from history to avoid repeating it, which he believes is crucial for building stability and genuine democracy. He remarked, “The TRC can be a powerful tool for addressing the legacies of conflict, injustice, and human rights violations. It provides a structured framework for truth-telling, healing, and reconciliation.”

He highlighted that the TRC will utilize public hearings, investigations, and reports to illuminate the troubling aspects of the nation’s history, emphasizing the importance of giving voice to those who have suffered.

Acknowledging that the work of the TRC comes with challenges, Kamikamica noted it often faces resistance from those uncomfortable with the truth or seeking to uphold the status quo. He called for support and collaboration from all sectors of society, including the government, civil organizations, and the public.

He warned that the success of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is not guaranteed, stressing that it relies on the dedication of all stakeholders to participate with honesty, transparency, and a readiness to embrace change.

Moreover, he highlighted the necessity for the Commission to operate independently, impartially, and without political influences. “More so, it requires a genuine commitment to justice, human rights, and progress,” he said.

In conclusion, Kamikamica urged for collective efforts to make the TRC a significant step towards justice, healing, and peace, asserting that it is not just about reconciling the past but shaping the future.
