The aviation sector in the Pacific region plays a crucial role as the islands rely on efficient air transportation for global connectivity, tourism promotion, and economic development. This was emphasized by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, at the inauguration of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) Liaison Office in Nadi on Friday.
Mr. Gavoka stated that the establishment of this office reflects the region’s steadfast commitment to tackling the unique challenges faced and advancing sustainable development in aviation. He extended a warm welcome to the chief guest, ICAO Secretary-General Juan Carlos Salazar, noting that his presence highlights the significance of this endeavor.
He expressed appreciation for the support and involvement of ICAO as they enter this new phase of collaboration and advancement. Mr. Gavoka asserted that the new ICAO regional office in Nadi represents a collective determination to enhance aviation safety, security, and sustainability.
“This office will act as a center for communication, technical support, and capacity building to address the specific needs of PSIDS in the Pacific,” he said. He also mentioned the heightened vulnerability of the Pacific region to climate change impacts, stressing the need for aviation practices to align with global sustainability objectives.
Mr. Gavoka expressed confidence that the office would become a symbol of collaborative progress and innovation in the aviation sector.
