A New Era for Pacific Aviation: ICAO Office Opens in Nadi

The aviation sector in the Pacific region plays a crucial role in connecting the islands to the world, promoting tourism, and driving economic growth. This was emphasized by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, during the inauguration of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) Liaison Office in Nadi on Friday.

Mr. Gavoka noted that the establishment of this office reflects the region’s strong commitment to tackling the unique challenges it faces and to fostering sustainable development in aviation.

He extended a warm welcome to the chief guest, ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, highlighting the significance of his attendance at the event. “Your support and participation are invaluable as we embark on this new chapter of collaboration and progress,” he stated.

The Acting Prime Minister also expressed that the new ICAO office in Nadi symbolizes a joint effort to enhance aviation safety, security, and sustainability.

“This office will act as a hub for communication, technical assistance, and capacity building tailored to meet the needs of the Pacific PSIDS,” he added. Furthermore, he pointed out that the Pacific is particularly susceptible to climate change impacts, making it essential for aviation practices to align with global sustainability goals.

Mr. Gavoka concluded with confidence that this office would become a symbol of progress, collaboration, and innovation in the region.
