A New Era Begins: Mike Friday Departs from USA Men’s Sevens Coaching

After a transformative decade, Mike Friday has announced his resignation as head coach of the USA men’s sevens rugby team. The 52-year-old former England sevens player, who took over the role in 2014, has decided to step down following the team’s eighth-place finish at the recent Olympic Games in Paris.

During his tenure, the USA team participated in three Olympics and two Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments. When Friday assumed leadership of the team, they faced significant challenges in qualifying for the Olympics.

He shared his decision to leave with players and staff at the start of the 2024 season. Reflecting on his time with the team, he noted that he took on a program that seemed nearly finished, embracing the challenge wholeheartedly.

“The journey has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, and I’m immensely proud to have been a part of it,” he remarked. “All good things must come to an end. After 10 years and many international competitions, it’s time to step away to spend more time with my family and loved ones,” the former coach expressed.

As Friday prepares for new opportunities and more time with his family, his impact on the team and on American rugby sevens is undeniable.
