Thirty patients at the Pacific Eye Institute experienced a joyful moment yesterday as the Guangdong Bright Journey medical team from China removed their surgical dressings. The effort has not only made a significant difference in the lives of these patients but has also benefitted a total of 100 individuals across the Pacific region.
Chinese ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, emphasized the impact of the Bright Journey medical team’s work, noting that they have successfully performed 100 cataract surgeries in the Pacific. “They have helped the Fijians regain their sight and return to a high quality of life,” Mr. Zhou stated. This mission is particularly meaningful as it restores hope to families, especially when the patients were once sole breadwinners who could no longer support their households due to vision problems.
Last year, the team achieved a notable milestone with 60 successful cataract surgeries, and this year, they plan to complete an additional 60 procedures. So far, they have conducted 30 surgeries, with another 30 scheduled in the upcoming days. Mr. Zhou expressed his happiness upon witnessing the patients’ reactions when their eye coverings were lifted, describing the visible joy and light in their eyes.
This humanitarian effort showcases the power of international collaboration in healthcare, fostering hope and improving lives in the Pacific region. It highlights the importance of addressing health challenges and supporting those in need, ultimately creating a brighter future for countless families.
Overall, the ongoing work by the Guangdong Bright Journey medical team brings a hopeful narrative of recovery and renewal to the region.
