Newly appointed Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has outlined her primary objectives, which center around women’s empowerment, child protection, support for vulnerable communities, and the fight against gender-based violence (GBV). In her inaugural remarks, Kiran expressed gratitude to her predecessor, Lynda Tabuya, whose efforts have significantly contributed to the ministry’s mission.
Kiran emphasized her commitment to addressing ongoing challenges within society, affirming that the ministry is dedicated not just to policy implementation but also to advocacy and inspiring transformative change. She stressed the importance of ensuring that no individual in Fiji is overlooked.
In her remarks regarding women’s empowerment, Kiran highlighted the crucial role women play as the backbone of families and communities in Fiji. She acknowledged the persistent barriers they face in achieving equality and safety. “Together, we will strengthen initiatives that promote women’s economic empowerment, ensure gender equality, and create opportunities for women to lead in all spheres of life,” Kiran declared.
Regarding children, Kiran described them as invaluable assets, placing their protection, education, and well-being at the forefront of her agenda. She committed to tackling child abuse, supporting needy families, and creating environments conducive to the healthy development of every child.
Lastly, Kiran noted that her ministry’s responsibilities also extend to often marginalized groups, including the elderly and individuals with disabilities. “We will review and enhance social protection programmes to ensure they are inclusive, effective, and responsive to the needs of our people,” she stated.
This new chapter for the ministry, under Kiran’s leadership, appears promising for addressing pressing societal issues and nurturing a more inclusive and equitable future for all Fijians.
