A significant chapter in the history of the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) came to a close yesterday with the conclusion of an extensive Reconciliation and Restoration program. This program lasted almost a year and marks a pivotal moment, occurring on the 24th anniversary of the attempted mutiny at the QEB in Nabua. Families of the eight soldiers who lost their lives during those tragic events expressed gratitude and relief, signifying a hopeful turning point for the military.
Salanieta Veilewai, the spouse of the late Private Temo Veilewai, commended the RFMF for their dedication to the program. She shared that it alleviated the pain that her family had endured for over two decades. “I would like to extend our appreciation for the tremendous effort made towards the families,” she stated, acknowledging the military’s continual remembrance of those who were lost.
Litiana Davui, widow of the late Jone Davui, reflected on how the month of November holds painful memories for her and her children. She extended an apology on behalf of her family for any role her late husband may have played in the past and conveyed her forgiveness to those connected to his demise.
Meanwhile, Mulase Rawaileba, son of the late Lance Corporal Simione Rawaileba, shared his scarce memories of his father but expressed hope and relief that the recent event signifies a positive change within the RFMF. “A new chapter has begun as a great deal of pain was relieved,” he said, underscoring the program’s importance in helping families move forward.
The conclusion of this reconciliation effort symbolizes a step toward healing, reflecting a commitment to acknowledging the past while fostering an environment of peace and understanding moving forward. This sentiment resonates through the families’ testimonials, suggesting a collective journey towards closure and reconciliation.
The RFMF’s initiative represents not just a tribute to those lost, but also a meaningful effort to restore relationships with affected families while paving the way for a more harmonious future.
