A Mother’s Miraculous Journey: From Cancer Diagnosis to Triumph

When Vakaloloma Sugu was expecting her third child three years ago, she noticed that her body reacted differently than in previous pregnancies. Following the birth of her son Elijah Moraiah Raivalita, doctors confirmed her concerns.

“I had lumps all over my body, and my pregnant belly was heavier than expected,” Ms. Sugu explained. “I felt weaker compared to my other pregnancies. I suspected something was wrong, but the doctors and nurses couldn’t confirm anything during our visits. They assured me everything was normal.”

Like any mother, Ms. Sugu was eager for her child’s arrival, but this pregnancy brought unforeseen challenges. She learned that Elijah’s heartbeat was abnormal and that an immediate C-section was necessary. Unfortunately, she didn’t get to see her son right away, as he was quickly taken to another room.

“I saw nurses bringing in other mothers’ babies, and I longed for that moment with my son,” she recalled. When she inquired about Elijah, she was told that the doctor wanted to speak with her, which raised her anxiety.

After persistent questioning, medical staff informed her that Elijah had a bloated stomach and needed to be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for tests. “I rushed to see him, and I broke down. His tiny frame covered with needles brought me to tears.”

A few days later, the results came back, and doctors diagnosed Elijah with neuroblastoma. “It was difficult to accept the diagnosis. They told us he had a tumor near his kidney, and his liver was enlarging.” The mention of cancer left Ms. Sugu and her husband in shock, prompting fears of a life-or-death situation.

“We realized how little we knew about cancer and its impact,” she said. “We had no idea there were support organizations like WOWS Kids, nor did we know about survivors.”

According to Ms. Sugu, WOWS Kids Fiji helped her family move from denial to acceptance. “They supported us with medication, transportation, and other forms of assistance. They were a blessing, and we are incredibly thankful. The support from family and friends was overwhelming.”

Just a month after his birth, Elijah began his first round of chemotherapy, followed by surgery to address the tumor. “I vividly remember that day because we had prayed and fasted for it, asking God to be in control and present in the operating room before we even arrived.”

Upon reaching the hospital, doctors shared the encouraging news that Elijah’s tumor was gone. “His body was returning to normal.”

Ms. Sugu described that moment as filled with joy, tears, and prayers. “It was pure happiness, reflecting God’s faithfulness to those who trust in Him. Our faith was tested, and we were rewarded immensely.”

Today, her three-year-old son is among the youngest cancer survivors in the country. “He is a joyful, active child full of life. It’s a blessing that he made it through, and his strength truly reflects his character.”

Despite the changes following the diagnosis, the family remains protective of Elijah. Ms. Sugu believes their journey underscores the importance of faith and early detection.

“Please, if your child is unwell, take them to the hospital; don’t keep them at home. Ensure they receive proper medical care.”
