For Lenisa Vurusa, being a market vendor is a role she cherishes deeply. Originally from Wainikai in Namosi, she epitomizes the resilience of hardworking mothers who strive daily to provide for their children in all weather conditions. For over a decade, Ms. Vurusa has dedicated herself to offering her customers the freshest produce available in the market, ensuring her four children receive a quality education.
“I began selling at the market around 2006 or 2007,” Ms. Vurusa shared. “I love being a market vendor because it supports my family and helps in securing my children’s future.” Her unwavering love for her children – Lavenia Adi Bilo, Eremasi Vuki, Ponipote Nayavusowata, and Tevita Rayaseyase – drives her relentless work ethic.
“I would like to see my kids become successful in life. Everything I do is aimed at providing them the best education to become successful Fijians in the future.” She has noticed a growing interest among her customers in purchasing local produce. “The price of vegetables is currently low but before, prices were high. I really feel happy serving the variety of customers who buy a range of vegetables from me. This occupation allows me to be my own boss.”
Interestingly, her original dream was to become a nurse, but financial constraints cut that ambition short. “Ever since I was a little girl, becoming a nurse was my ultimate dream because you can make a real difference in people’s lives. As a nurse, one offers hope to people, sometimes during the worst time of their life.” Despite this unfulfilled dream, her confidence and satisfaction indicate that she has made a valuable choice in her life.
Amid her busy schedule, she finds ultimate relaxation in basking in the sun by the seaside. Ms. Vurusa is optimistic about continuing her market work for the next five years. She encourages fellow Fijians facing difficulties to remain strong and persistent. “I want to advise those struggling individually to stay determined and resilient as they move forward. The road to success is never-ending, and as long as we pray to God and keep working hard, all will be well.”
