A Mother’s Market: The Heart Behind Her Hustle

Lenisa Vurusa is proud to be a market vendor and wouldn’t trade her role for anything else. Hailing from Wainikai in Namosi, she embodies the spirit of hardworking mothers who tirelessly strive to support their families in challenging conditions. For over a decade, Ms. Vurusa has provided her customers with fresh produce, dedicating her efforts to her children’s education.

“I began selling at the market around 2006 or 2007,” she shares. “I love being a market vendor because it supports my family and helps secure my children’s future.” Her commitment to her four children—Lavenia Adi Bilo, Eremasi Vuki, Ponipote Nayavusowata, and Tevita Rayaseyase—motivates her every day.

“I want to see my kids succeed in life. Everything I do is aimed at ensuring they receive the best education possible so they can thrive as Fijians in the future.” Ms. Vurusa has noticed a growing interest among her customers in purchasing local vegetables. “Currently, vegetable prices are low, but previously, they were high. It makes me happy to serve a variety of customers who buy from me. This job allows me to be my own boss,” she explains.

Interestingly, her initial aspiration was to become a nurse, a dream that was unfulfilled due to financial constraints. “Since I was young, my ultimate dream was to become a nurse to make a difference in people’s lives,” she reflects. She believes that nurses offer hope, especially during people’s toughest times.

Despite her unfulfilled dream, Ms. Vurusa exudes confidence and satisfaction, suggesting that she made a rewarding choice. When she’s not tending to her market, she enjoys sunny days at the beach as a form of relaxation.

Looking ahead, she hopes to continue doing what she loves for the next five years. Additionally, she encourages her fellow Fijians facing difficulties to stay strong and continue their efforts. “To those struggling, I advise you to remain determined and resilient as you move forward. The path to success is ongoing, and as long as we pray to God and keep working hard, everything will be okay.”
