For many parents, watching their children grow into strong and independent individuals is a cherished dream. However, for Shareen Lata, this dream is overshadowed by the heartbreaking reality that she may not see her youngest son become the man she hopes he will be.
Rishav Lal, her eight-year-old son, was diagnosed with leukemia at just two years old. Despite his illness, Ms. Lata describes Rishav as a kind-hearted boy who loves painting and shows great compassion, often reassuring her not to cry about his health condition with a gentle nudge and the words, “stop yarr.”
Ms. Lata reflects on the journey they have faced since Rishav’s initial diagnosis. Although he responded well to his first round of chemotherapy, the cancer eventually returned. “It has been five years now,” she explained. “Initially, after his first treatment, he was doing well and was more energetic. However, the cancer has now spread throughout his body, and the doctors have informed us that chemotherapy will no longer help.”
With no available treatments overseas, Ms. Lata places her hope in faith, wishing for a miracle that will cure her son. Recently, Rishav underwent surgery, and the results confirmed the spread of leukemia. Despite facing significant health challenges, including fatigue and reduced appetite, Rishav still makes time to socialize with friends.
Feeling overwhelmed and helpless, Ms. Lata has found immense support from her family and the WOWS Kids Fiji foundation over the last five years. “WOWS has been incredible,” she said. “They have helped us with groceries, school expenses, transportation, and medications.”
Grateful for the ongoing support, Ms. Lata continues to pray for her son, hoping each day that she will not have to face the loss of Rishav.
