It is every parent’s aspiration to see their children grow into strong, independent individuals capable of overcoming life’s challenges. For Shareen Lata, the hardest aspect of raising her children lies in the painful realization that she may not witness her youngest son grow into the resilient man she hopes he will become.
Her eight-year-old son, Rishav Lal, has been battling leukemia since he was just two years old. Ms. Lata describes Rishav as a kind and loving boy with a passion for painting. Despite his understanding of his condition and the limited time he may have with his family, Rishav tries to comfort his mother, gently nudging her arm and saying, “stop yarr” to convey that everything will be alright.
“Rishav was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of two, but unfortunately, it has returned,” Ms. Lata shared. “It’s been five years since his diagnosis. After his first round of chemotherapy, he seemed to recover well, eating healthily and becoming more energetic. Occasionally, he would show symptoms, but the treatment appeared to help him.”
Sadly, the cancer has now spread throughout his body, and doctors have indicated that chemotherapy will no longer be effective in stopping or delaying its progression. “There are no treatments available even overseas,” she lamented. “At this point, all we can do is have faith in God and hope for my son’s healing.”
After a recent operation, the results revealed the extensive spread of leukemia. “My son doesn’t have much time left; he often feels drowsy and has a poor appetite. His health is declining gradually, but he can still engage in conversations and spend time with his friends,” she said. “I feel powerless but hold onto hope.”
Throughout these challenging years, the support from her family and the WOWS Kids Fiji foundation has been invaluable. “WOWS has been incredible. They have assisted us with groceries, school expenses, transportation, and medical needs. Their ongoing support for Rishav over the past five years has been a blessing, and I will always be grateful,” Ms. Lata expressed. “My family has also been supportive, as have many others we know. However, I pray every day that I will not lose my Rishav.”
