A Mother’s Hope Amidst Heartbreak: Rishav’s Story

For Shareen Lata, witnessing her children grow up to be strong, independent individuals is a cherished dream. However, this dream is clouded by the reality that she may not be able to see her youngest son become the man she knows he can be. Eight-year-old Rishav Lal has been battling leukemia since he was just two years old.

Shareen describes her son as kind and loving, with a passion for painting. Despite his condition and the understanding that he may not have much time left with his family, Rishav offers comfort to his mother, often nudging her and saying, “stop yarr,” a gentle reminder for her to stay strong.

After being diagnosed with leukemia at a young age, Rishav initially showed positive signs following his first round of chemotherapy, responding well and regaining his energy. However, the illness has returned, and it has spread throughout his body. The doctors have informed Shareen that chemotherapy will not be effective this time, and unfortunately, there are no treatment options available overseas.

Shareen expresses her heartache, stating, “Right now, all we can do is put our faith in God and hope my baby will be cured.” Recently, Rishav underwent surgery, but the results revealed that the leukemia has progressed significantly. Despite feeling weak and experiencing a loss of appetite, he is still able to engage with his friends and communicate.

Over the past five years, Shareen has received immense support from her family and the WOWS Kids Fiji foundation. “WOWS has been amazing,” she shares. “They have assisted us with groceries, school funds, transportation, and medication. Their support has been unwavering, and I am forever grateful.”

While she feels a sense of helplessness regarding her son’s situation, Shareen continues to pray daily, hoping to keep Rishav in her life for as long as possible.
