It is a parent’s aspiration to see their children grow into strong, independent individuals capable of overcoming life’s challenges. Shareen Lata, however, faces the heart-wrenching reality of not being able to witness her youngest son develop into that strong man.
Her eight-year-old son, Rishav Lal, has been battling leukemia since he was just two years old. Ms. Lata describes Rishav as a kind and caring boy who enjoys painting. Although he is aware of the limited time he has with his family, Rishav reassures his mother not to cry about his condition by giving her a gentle nudge on the arm and telling her, “stop yarr,” a gesture that means “it’s OK, mum.”
Rishav was diagnosed with leukemia at two, but unfortunately, the illness has returned. “It’s been five years now,” Ms. Lata shared. After his initial chemotherapy treatment, Rishav appeared to be doing well, eating and exhibiting more energy. Although he experienced occasional symptoms, the chemotherapy and medication seemed effective at the time.
Regrettably, his cancer has now spread throughout his body, and doctors have informed the family that chemotherapy will no longer be able to stop or delay its progression. Furthermore, there are no treatments available overseas.
“At this point, all we can do is put our faith in God and hope for Rishav’s recovery,” Ms. Lata said. “Three weeks ago, he underwent surgery, and the results revealed that leukemia had advanced significantly.” She described worrying signs: her son often feels drowsy and struggles with his appetite, yet he still manages to engage with his friends and speak well.
Feeling utterly helpless in the face of her son’s illness, Ms. Lata expressed gratitude for the support she has received from family and the WOWS Kids Fiji foundation over the past five years. “WOWS has been incredible,” she said. “They have assisted us with groceries, school expenses, including transportation and medication. They have supported Rishav for five years, and I will always be thankful for that.”
“My family has been equally supportive, as have many around us. Yet, every day I pray to God that I do not lose my Rishav.”
