It is a universal dream for parents to see their children grow up strong and independent, capable of facing life’s challenges. However, for Shareen Lata, the most difficult aspect of parenting is the realization that she may not witness her youngest son becoming that strong man.
Rishav Lal, her eight-year-old son, has been battling leukemia since he was two years old. Despite the struggles, Shareen describes him as a kind and caring boy who enjoys painting. Understanding the gravity of his condition, Rishav often reassures his mother not to cry when discussing his illness by nudging her and saying, “stop yarr,” which translates to “it’s OK mum.”
“Rishav was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of two, and unfortunately, the disease has returned,” Ms. Lata explained. “It has been five years now. After his first round of chemotherapy, he seemed to be doing well—eating and feeling more energetic. While he showed some symptoms from time to time, chemotherapy and medications were initially effective.”
However, the situation has drastically changed. “The cancer has now spread throughout his body, and the doctors have informed us that chemotherapy will no longer be able to stop or delay its progression. There are no viable treatments available overseas either. For now, all we can do is place our faith in God and hope for a miracle.”
Recently, Rishav underwent surgery, and the results confirmed that the leukemia has spread significantly. “My son doesn’t have much time left; he experiences drowsiness and has a poor appetite,” Shareen shared. “His health is declining slowly, but he can still converse well and spend time with his friends. At this point, all I can do is hope.”
Feeling powerless regarding her son’s condition, Shareen has found immense support from her family and the WOWS Kids Fiji foundation over the past five years. “WOWS has been incredible, providing help with groceries, school expenses, transportation, and medications. They have supported Rishav for five years now, and I will be forever grateful to them. My family has also been a strong support system, and we have been blessed with kindness from everyone around us. Yet, I pray to God daily that I don’t lose my Rishav.”
