A Mother’s Heart: Hope and Strength Amidst Heartbreak

For many parents, there is a dream of seeing their children grow strong and independent, capable of facing life’s challenges. However, for Shareen Lata, the sorrow of not being able to witness her youngest son becoming that man is a heavy burden to bear.

Her eight-year-old son, Rishav Lal, has been fighting leukemia since he was only two years old. Despite his battle, Ms. Lata describes him as a kind and caring boy with a passion for painting.

Rishav, understanding the gravity of his condition and the time he may not have with his family, often reassures his mother. He nudges her on the arm and says “stop yarr” when he senses her sadness, a gesture that translates to “it’s OK mum.”

Ms. Lata shares, “He was diagnosed with leukemia at two years old, but it has returned. It’s been five years now.” She recalls a time when Rishav responded well to his first chemotherapy treatment, becoming more energetic and enjoying his meals. However, the cancer has since spread throughout his body, and the doctors have informed them that chemotherapy will not be effective this time.

“There is no treatment overseas as well,” she adds. For now, all they can do is place their faith in God and pray for a miracle.

Three weeks ago, Rishav underwent surgery, but the results revealed that the leukemia has advanced. “My son doesn’t have much time with us,” Ms. Lata says, noting his increased drowsiness and lack of appetite. Fortunately, he remains able to converse and spend time with friends.

Feeling helpless, she expresses her gratitude towards the support from her family and the WOWS Kids Fiji foundation, which has been crucial over the past five years. “WOWS has been amazing. They’ve helped us with groceries, school fees, transportation, and medication,” she says.

“My family has been supportive as well; everyone we know is. But I’m praying to God every day that I don’t lose my Rishav.”
