A Miracle Baby: A Journey from Cancer to Playtime

Every parent’s worst fear is to discover that their child is ill. For Wainibuka residents Meresiana Leba and Seremaia Namanurua, their lives changed dramatically when their son, Orisi Ratulevu, was diagnosed with cancer shortly after birth.

Although Ms. Leba does not remember the specific type of cancer, she lightened up while recounting how the cancer affecting her son’s stomach was successfully removed. Now, he happily plays with other children in their village.

“I didn’t get to see him for three weeks after I gave birth because he was in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU),” Ms. Leba shared. “The doctors found a cyst in his stomach and asked us to stay a few more days for further tests to identify the issue.”

They were later informed that it was cancer. After spending an additional month in the hospital, they were told that Orisi required surgery to eliminate the cancerous cyst and the bile that was spreading in his stomach.

“I consented for him to undergo the procedure. I signed all the necessary forms,” she said. “They assured me they would ‘drain it out,’ and I agreed for my baby’s survival. I didn’t realize that his left kidney was also removed because I wasn’t informed.”

Today, Orisi is a healthy one-year-old. However, due to his surgery, his parents must refrain from giving him cold foods or drinks and are advised to keep him warm.

“He is energetic, and we feel blessed that the doctors were able to remove the cancer and clear everything out. The most crucial part of his care is to avoid cold drinks and food, ensuring he stays warm at all times,” Ms. Leba explained.

Orisi is only allowed to eat vegetables and no meat, neither processed nor otherwise, and dry powdered milk is off-limits. Despite these strict dietary rules, he is walking, talking, and communicating like any other toddler his age.

“We received tremendous support when he was diagnosed, and we are thankful for everyone who helped us,” she said. “My mother and sister were incredibly supportive, checking on him regularly and sending warm clothing and diapers.”

“WOWS Kids Fiji was remarkable in arranging our transportation, taxi fares, and providing funds for medicine. They even helped us with groceries, which was invaluable to us.”

The family expressed gratitude to the medical staff, their relatives, and the WOWS Kids Foundation for all their help. “We are truly blessed.”
