A Market Vendor’s Love: A Mother’s Journey to Success

For Lenisa Vurusa, being a market vendor is a fulfilling role she wouldn’t trade for anything else. Hailing from Wainikai in Namosi, Ms. Vurusa embodies the dedication of hardworking mothers who tirelessly strive to provide for their families, regardless of the weather.

For over a decade, she has committed herself to offering customers the freshest produce available, all in support of her four children’s education. “I began selling at the market around 2006 or 2007,” she noted. “I love being a market vendor because it supports my family and helps in securing my children’s future.”

Her deep love for her children—Lavenia Adi Bilo, Eremasi Vuki, Ponipote Nayavusowata, and Tevita Rayaseyase—drives her determination to succeed. “I would like to see my kids become successful in life. Everything I do is to ensure they receive the best education to grow into successful Fijians.”

Customers are increasingly interested in purchasing local produce from her. “Currently, the price of vegetables is low, but it was high before this. I feel happy serving various customers who buy a range of vegetables from me. This job allows me to be my own boss.”

Interestingly, her initial aspiration was to become a nurse, a dream that was curtailed due to financial difficulties. “Since I was a little girl, becoming a nurse was my ultimate dream because you can really make a difference in people’s lives. As a nurse, you offer hope during some of the worst times in their lives.”

Despite her unfulfilled dream, her demeanor and confidence suggest that she has made one of the best choices in her life. When she’s not busy working, she enjoys spending a day at the beach for relaxation.

Looking ahead, Ms. Vurusa is optimistic that, in the next five years, she will continue doing what she loves. She encourages fellow Fijians facing challenges to remain strong and persevere. “I want to advise anyone struggling to stay determined and resilient for the future. The path to success is never-ending, and as long as we pray to God and keep working hard, everything will be alright.”
