Lenisa Vurusa regards her role as a market vendor as a treasured part of her life. Hailing from Wainikai in Namosi, Ms. Vurusa embodies the spirit of dedicated mothers who work tirelessly in both hot and cold conditions to provide for their families. For over a decade, she has offered her customers the freshest produce available, driven by her commitment to fund her four children’s education.
Ms. Vurusa began her market venture around 2006 or 2007. She expresses her passion for this line of work, emphasizing its importance in supporting her family and securing her children’s future. Her motivation stems from a deep love for her children—Lavenia Adi Bilo, Eremasi Vuki, Ponipote Nayavusowata, and Tevita Rayaseyase—propelling her forward without faltering.
“I aspire to see my children become successful in life,” she said. “Everything I do is focused on providing them with the best education possible so they can thrive as successful Fijians in the future.”
Increasingly, her customers are showing interest in local produce. Although average vegetable prices are currently low, Ms. Vurusa enjoys the variety of customers who purchase from her. She appreciates the independence that comes with being her own boss.
Interestingly, Ms. Vurusa initially dreamed of becoming a nurse, a goal that was cut short due to financial difficulties. “From a young age, I wanted to be a nurse to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives,” she reflects, adding that nurses offer hope during the most challenging times.
Despite not realizing her initial dream, Ms. Vurusa remains confident that choosing to be a market vendor has been one of the best decisions of her life. When not working, she enjoys soaking up the sun at the beach, which she considers her preferred way to unwind.
Looking toward the future, she hopes to continue doing what she loves for at least another five years. Ms. Vurusa encourages fellow Fijians facing hardships to stay strong and keep fighting. “My advice to those struggling is to remain determined and resilient,” she said. “The journey to success is ongoing, and as long as we pray and keep working hard, everything will be alright.”
