At 74 years old, while many enjoy retirement, Sabita Gandhi feels she has much to offer society. A dedicated social worker, she views aiding others as her purpose. Growing up with the principles of hard work and compassion instilled by her family, her passion for social work emerged in her youth, shaped by her family’s struggles.
Ms. Gandhi recalls her upbringing in Navua and later in Samabula, Suva, where she lived with her six siblings and extended family in a modest home. Despite the lack of material wealth, her family fostered values of love, kindness, and respect.
“My drive to assist those in need stems from my faith and cultural beliefs, alongside a strong sense of community responsibility,” she states. Balancing her home life with social commitments, she is actively involved with the Poor Relief Society, an NGO where she participates in meetings, functions, and outreach to those in need.
She expresses fulfillment in her time spent with family, aiding the less fortunate, and socializing with friends. Even as age brings challenges, Ms. Gandhi remains determined to contribute more to her community, advocating for education and raising awareness about health issues.
In her downtime, she finds solace in the melodies of old Hindi songs, which help her remain centered. She believes that life’s true value lies in giving rather than accumulating.
“Stay positive, have faith, and trust in your goals,” she advises.
