A Lament of the Heart

When words fall short, music speaks volumes. This sentiment is embodied by InsideOut band leader Apakuki Nalawa, known as Kuki, in his debut solo EP released on June 28.

Titled “Noqu Vanua,” the Vatukaloko native from Ra describes the EP as a “lament for Fiji.”

With over a decade of experience in the music industry, Kuki’s personal journey—including the recent loss of his father, a plea for unity among Fijian youth, and his profound love for music—resonates deeply in the lyrics of his new album. This emotional tapestry sets it apart from other local EPs in more than a decade.

Kuki views this EP not as a conclusion but as the start of showcasing Fijian music to the world. For many of his followers, the question isn’t why this is his first solo album, but why it took so long for him to shine independently.

“It is my nature to always put others first,” Kuki explained. “Leading InsideOut and directing Resonance Fiji, I didn’t want to seem selfish by pushing my own agenda.”

Kuki detailed the journey of InsideOut, driven by a passion for music and the ambition to pursue it full-time, a goal achieved by establishing revenue streams, corporate connections, and finally, Resonance.

“After building our base, we agreed that after 10 years, we would revisit our original goals. My brothers trusted me to lead, so we prioritized an InsideOut album first. Once that was done, I moved on to my own album.”

Reflecting on what the album means to him, Kuki paused, remembering his late father, to whom he dedicates the song “Maqu.”

“‘Maqu’ is about my dad’s passing and a tribute to all fathers. It also touches on the unfortunate reality in many iTaukei households where saying ‘I love you’ is uncommon. After my dad passed, I realized how significant those three words are, and I now try to normalize this with my sons.”

Kuki stressed the importance of fathers setting examples in their families and communities, a theme central to “Maqu.”

Kuki’s mother, Nancy, and sister, Losalini, also shared memories of his early passion for music, often perceived as making ‘noise’ in the house. “We knew he loved music,” they said. “From humble beginnings, we are proud of his achievements.”

Although his father is no longer around, Mrs. Nalawa believes Kuki can always rely on God for strength. Losalini shared the emotional journey behind “Maqu,” created in memory of their father, who passed in 2022.

“Our father taught Kuki many things about vanua and tradition,” Losalini said. “The song carries deep sentimental value, serving as a reminder to appreciate parents while they are still alive.”
