During the World Consumer Day celebration in Suva, Seema Shandil, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council of Fiji, addressed the critical issue of making sustainability accessible to all, not just the wealthy. The event, themed “A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles,” underscored the need for eco-friendly products, ethical food options, and renewable energy sources to be available to everyone in Fiji, regardless of their financial means or location.
Shandil emphasized that genuine change requires collaboration across various sectors, including government, businesses, civil organizations, and educational institutions. She notably highlighted the importance of engaging youth in sustainability efforts, recognizing students as future leaders who will advocate for responsible practices and keep institutions accountable.
The event also featured insights from several stakeholders dedicated to sustainability. Dr. Sivendra Michael, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, reinforced the significance of civic pride and individual responsibility in fostering a sustainable future. Amitesh Deo, Founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, addressed the necessity for improved recycling systems and innovative waste reduction strategies to alleviate waste management challenges.
Advocacy groups like the Fix My Food Campaign called for urgent reforms in Fiji’s food systems, spotlighting the importance of moving away from unsustainable practices. Professor Rafiuddin Ahmed from USP PACE SD emphasized the need for research, technological innovation, and collaborative problem-solving to tackle the pressing sustainability issues facing Fiji.
Additionally, students from six schools presented their innovative ideas for sustainability, showcasing the active engagement and commitment of the younger generation to environmental stewardship. Exhibitors outside the venue demonstrated various sustainability initiatives, providing attendees with hands-on experiences of Fiji’s growing green movement.
This collective effort towards achieving sustainability in Fiji signals a heightened awareness and optimism for a greener, more equitable future. The diverse collaboration among stakeholders indicates a constructive path forward, aiming to ensure that all consumers, irrespective of their economic status, can partake in the stewardship of the environment. This shared vision could lead to significant advancements in both environmental sustainability and economic growth in Fiji.
