A Hero’s Journey: One Boy’s Battle Against Leukemia

Nazia, the mother of Hazrat Shihaab Ali, was on a quest for answers from the medical community, seeking clarity on her son’s health issues. On September 29, 2014, their lives took a dramatic turn when a pediatrician at Suva Private Hospital, worried about Hazrat’s condition, urged them to go directly to the Children’s Ward at CWM Hospital. This dedicated doctor even accompanied them to ensure they arrived safely, an act of compassion that Nazia will always remember.

Tragically, the following morning, they learned that Hazrat had leukemia, a diagnosis that devastated the Ali family. The emotional toll was immense, affecting not just Hazrat but also all his loved ones.

For nearly three years, Hazrat battled through treatment at the pediatric oncology department of CWM Hospital. During this challenging period, Nazia and her family made considerable sacrifices to protect him, including halting their social lives and avoiding gatherings to minimize his risk of infections.

Despite these hardships, Nazia expresses immense gratitude for the exceptional care Hazrat received. “The doctors and nurses at CWM Hospital were absolutely wonderful. They provided the utmost care throughout almost three years of his treatment,” she recalls, mentioning a heartwarming celebration of Hazrat’s third birthday in the hospital with a cake.

Beyond the medical team, support from WOWS Kids Fiji—an organization dedicated to assisting children with cancer—was vital for Nazia and her family. “WOWS Kids Fiji was a lifeline for us,” she states, acknowledging their invaluable emotional and practical support during their toughest times.

Throughout his journey, Hazrat has emerged as a symbol of strength and resilience. Despite long months spent in hospital rooms and enduring significant pain, he has maintained his smile, serving as a beacon of hope to those around him. His mother devoted herself to his care by leaving work to stay by his side, constantly praying for his recovery and strength.

Now a Year 7 student at Makoi Muslim Primary School, Hazrat continues to display the same bravery that has characterized his fight against cancer. His story exemplifies not merely survival, but the indomitable spirit of a young boy refusing to be overcome by illness. For Nazia and her family, Hazrat represents more than just a son; he stands as a hero and a symbol of hope for others confronting similar challenges.
