A Hero’s Journey: One Boy’s Battle Against Leukemia

Nazia, the mother of Hazrat Shihaab Ali, was determined to find answers regarding her son’s health, leading to a life-altering moment on September 29, 2014. A pediatrician at Suva Private Hospital, alarmed by Hazrat’s condition, advised them to immediately proceed to the Children’s Ward at CWM Hospital, even accompanying them to ensure they arrived safely—a gesture Nazia holds in high esteem.

The following morning brought devastating news: Hazrat was diagnosed with leukemia, a revelation that shattered the Ali family. The profound impact of such a diagnosis extended beyond Hazrat, affecting everyone around him. For nearly three years, Hazrat battled the disease under the care of the pediatric oncology department at CWM Hospital.

During this challenging period, Nazia and her family made significant sacrifices. They curtailed their social activities to protect Hazrat from infections, choosing to stay home and avoid family gatherings. Despite the difficulties, Nazia remains thankful for the exceptional care provided by the medical staff at CWM Hospital. She fondly recalls how they celebrated Hazrat’s third birthday with a cake at the hospital, highlighting the warmth and compassion of the healthcare professionals.

Support from WOWS Kids Fiji also played a crucial role in their journey. Nazia describes the organization as a lifeline, offering both emotional and practical assistance during their toughest times. “They understood what we were going through and were always there when we needed them,” she shares.

Hazrat has become a symbol of resilience throughout his ordeal. Despite facing pain and long months in a hospital room, he has kept his smile, embodying hope and strength. Nazia had to leave her job to be by his side, praying for his recovery and well-being. Yet, every sacrifice has been worth it.

Now a Year 7 student at Makoi Muslim Primary School, Hazrat continues to display the same courage that has characterized his journey. His story is more than one of survival; it portrays the indomitable spirit of a young boy determined not to let illness defeat him. For Nazia and her family, Hazrat is more than just their son—he is a hero and a beacon of hope for all who face similar struggles.
