A Hero’s Journey: One Boy’s Battle Against Leukemia

Nazia Ali’s life changed dramatically on September 29, 2014, when she received the devastating news that her son, Hazrat Shihaab Ali, was diagnosed with leukemia. Concerned about Hazrat’s condition, a pediatrician at Suva Private Hospital referred them to the Children’s Ward at CWM Hospital and even accompanied them to ensure they arrived safely, an act of kindness that Nazia treasures.

The following morning, the diagnosis confirmed their worst fears, shattering the Ali family’s world. For nearly three years, Hazrat underwent treatment in the pediatric oncology department of CWM Hospital. During this emotionally challenging time, Nazia and her family made considerable sacrifices, halting their social life to protect Hazrat from infections and limiting family gatherings.

Despite these difficulties, Nazia expresses immense gratitude for the care Hazrat received. She recalls, “The doctors and nurses at CWM Hospital were absolutely wonderful. They provided the utmost care throughout almost three years of his treatment,” emphasizing a memorable moment when they celebrated Hazrat’s third birthday with a cake at the hospital.

In addition to the medical support, Nazia also highlights the crucial role played by WOWS Kids Fiji, an organization dedicated to assisting children with cancer and their families. “WOWS Kids Fiji was a lifeline for us,” she states, recognizing their emotional and practical support during their toughest times.

Throughout his struggle, Hazrat has become a symbol of strength and resilience, managing to maintain his smile despite the pain and long hours in a hospital room. His mother devoted herself to his side, praying for his recovery and well-being, knowing that every sacrifice was worthwhile.

Now a Year 7 student at Makoi Muslim Primary School, Hazrat continues to battle with the same determination that has characterized his journey. His story goes beyond survival; it stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of a young boy who refuses to be defeated by illness. For Nazia and her family, Hazrat is more than just a son; he is a hero and a beacon of hope for those facing similar challenges.
