Families from Koro in Levuka, Lomaiviti were filled with excitement as they eagerly awaited the arrival of Goundar Shipping Limited’s MV Captain Inoke. This occasion held particular significance for the Ratotodro family, as the vessel is named in memory of their late father, Captain Inoke Ratotodro.
Emotional scenes unfolded as the ship docked at Port Mua-i-Walu, with Captain Inoke’s eldest daughter, Melaia Ratotodro, overcoming her tears as she remembered and honored her father. “Our dad, who was one of the longest-serving staff of Goundar Shipping Limited, passed away last October. In his honor, Goundar has named this vessel after him,” she shared. Despite their sorrow, the family expressed gratitude for this heartfelt tribute. “We may miss him dearly, but we are thankful for what the company has done. He was a very hardworking man who dedicated the last 30 years of his life to this company,” Ms. Ratotodro added.
Managing Director George Goundar also reminisced about the impact Mr. Ratotodro had on the company, highlighting their close friendship. “When I started this company in 2011, he stood by me and helped establish it. His advice and knowledge about the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji were invaluable. He practically ran the company, overseeing operations while I focused on engineering,” he said.
The MV Captain Inoke is captained by Sainimere Qutonilaba, who has been with Goundar Shipping since 2011, starting her journey as a cadet. Since then, she has played a significant role in bringing new vessels to the company from abroad. Before embarking on a tour of the vessel, a traditional ceremony was held.
This event not only commemorates the legacy of Captain Inoke Ratotodro but also highlights the importance of community and the bonds formed through shared experiences. It serves as a reminder that hard work and dedication leave lasting impacts, and companies like Goundar Shipping are committed to honoring those contributions.
As families celebrate this tribute, it fosters a sense of hope and remembrance, showcasing how the legacies of dedicated individuals can continue to inspire future generations.
