In 1961, over 1,500 individuals, including men, women, and children from various regions of Fiji, gathered in Daku, a village located slightly inland from the Wanibokasi River, to witness the inauguration of the village school in the morning and celebrate a wedding in the afternoon.

According to the Fiji Times on September 15, 1961, the school was constructed without any financial support from the government and took just 12 days to complete. The building, made of a combination of timber and concrete, was solely constructed by local carpenters.

The wedding celebrated that day was between Ratu Ponipate Baleinanene, also known as Roko Takala, who was the son of the late Ratu Lote Daulakeba, the paramount chief of Daku, and Adi Rewa Saurara, the daughter of Meleti Saurara and niece of Emosi Saurara. The ceremony was officiated by Rev Maika Tora and took place in the village hall.
