Joseva Sokovagone Tuitubou and Letirina Lutu, who initially planned to marry in December, unexpectedly tied the knot yesterday at the Nasau Village Hall on Koro Island in front of family and government officials.
The wedding was facilitated by Deputy Registrar General and marriage officer Viliame Kubunameca, who was part of a delegation accompanying Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga during his visit to Koro Island in the Lomaiviti Group.
An emotional Ms. Lutu expressed her joy when asked if they anticipated their marriage on that day. She hails from Tuvuca Village in Vanuabalavu, Lau, with family connections to Naceva Village in Cicia.
“When we started living together, I always reminded my now-husband that we needed to get married because we have two children and live in the village. Getting married today is a dream come true for me,” Ms. Lutu shared. She added that a civil ceremony was sufficient for her preference over a church wedding.
Husband Mr. Tuitubou expressed gratitude for the government’s initiative to bring marriage services directly to the people, eliminating the need for travel expenses to Suva for such formalities. He expressed happiness about their marriage and commitment to his wife and their two children.
Mr. Kubunameca offered wise words about the significance of their vows, likening marriage to navigating the open sea with its varying conditions. He emphasized the importance of communication and harmony in a marriage, providing guidance on maintaining a happy union.
