Shalvin Kumar and Sheema Lata, a married couple who teach at the same school, celebrated a significant achievement during the University of the South Pacific graduation ceremony in Suva last Friday. Shalvin, 29, earned his Bachelor of Arts in Law, while Sheema, 26, received her Master of Arts in Education.
Reflecting on their seven years of marriage and shared journey towards academic success, Kumar emphasized the importance of lifelong learning. He acknowledged the balancing act of their dual careers, stating that Sheema took on most household responsibilities to allow him the time to focus on his studies.
Studying online presented its challenges, especially in managing their professional commitments alongside academic work, but Kumar affirmed that it was a rewarding sacrifice. They both teach English at Seaqaqa Central College and faced criticism regarding Kumar’s pursuit of a law degree after completing a Bachelor’s in Arts and a Graduate Certificate in Education.
Despite the doubts cast upon him about shifting to law, Kumar remained focused on his aspirations. He expressed that becoming a lawyer was a longstanding dream, but due to the lack of scholarships, he initially pursued an education degree. After establishing his career as a teacher, he was finally able to embark on his law studies.
Kumar aims to continue his education by pursuing a master’s in law, while Sheema plans to relocate to Dubai to further her teaching career. Kumar also aspires to become a criminal lawyer.
