A Call to Action: Community Urged to Protect Children from HIV/AIDS

Children who have contracted HIV/AIDS through blood sharing and other means are currently undergoing rehabilitation at Lautoka Hospital. Women, Children, and Social Protection Minister Lynda Tabuya has confirmed that families of the affected children have sought assistance.

Minister Tabuya stated, “I was made aware of a couple of children at Lautoka Hospital who engaged in blood sharing, leading to their contraction of HIV/AIDS.” She emphasized the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of the children’s identities due to legal obligations but acknowledged the deep concern expressed by their families.

She described the situation as unfortunate and urged the community to take responsibility in caring for children. “We need families and communities to step up and support our children. A prevention plan and strategy are essential, and we call on our community, traditional leaders, and the vanua to fulfill this responsibility to look after our people,” Ms. Tabuya said.

Additionally, she urged faith-based leaders to actively promote awareness and prevention from their platforms. “When youth and children come together in their churches, it creates a powerful movement,” she added.
