Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized the importance of fostering equal citizenship for all residents of Fiji, highlighting it as essential for the nation’s development, peace, and prosperity. In his Diwali message, Chaudhry reflected on the festival of lights signifying the triumph of good over evil and the illumination of knowledge that leads to truth and happiness.
He expressed concern that despite the noble ideals encapsulated in slogans like “unity in diversity,” these aspirations have often been overshadowed by the complexities of reality. He pointed out that genuine unity has yet to manifest, as diversity has frequently dominated the social landscape.
Chaudhry noted that the history of Fiji demonstrates that no single community can thrive independently, referencing past coups as evidence of this interconnectedness among the country’s various ethnic groups, including the iTaukei, Indian, Rotuman, Part-European, Chinese, and other Pacific Islanders. He asserted that true unity, which is vital for peace, cannot exist while inequality persists.
He called for the elimination of race-based discrimination and called attention to the ongoing practices that contradict constitutional provisions against such discrimination. With discussions surrounding a possible Truth and Reconciliation Commission, he viewed this as an opportunity to address these long-standing issues.
Chaudhry also highlighted the critical role of the youth in this reconciliation process. He asserted that they would greatly benefit from a united Fiji, which would create opportunities previously hindered by political unrest and economic turmoil. He urged the younger generation to actively contribute to building a peaceful future and underscored the responsibility of elders to support them in this endeavor.
To create a harmonious Fiji, Chaudhry advocated for collaboration between youth and elders, emphasizing that overcoming differences and working toward common goals is paramount.
As Fiji contemplates its future, the call for unity and collaboration among all citizens presents a hopeful path forward, fostering an environment where every individual has the opportunity to thrive in peace and prosperity. This vision of a united Fiji is not only vital for addressing past grievances but also essential for ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
