At the recent commemoration of the attempted mutiny at Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua, Aporosa Rokowaqa, the brother of the late CRW soldier Lagani Rokowaqa, delivered a heartfelt message to senior officers of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). He emphasized the importance of leading with dignity and integrity to foster meaningful change within the military.
Referencing Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, Mr. Rokowaqa reminded the officers to prioritize their responsibilities to God and their commitment to the nation of Fiji over personal interests. He urged them to stand firm against greed and selfishness, considering the impact of their actions on future generations.
In an emotional address, he also sought forgiveness from the RFMF for his brother’s involvement in the 2000 mutiny, reflecting on the hardships faced by Lagani’s family during that tumultuous period. He recalled how the family was in a vulnerable state, with his brother’s daughter only four years old and their mother expecting another child at the time of the events, stating that they have carried the burden of grief for many years.
Mr. Rokowaqa’s appeal for understanding and healing signifies a step towards reconciliation, highlighting a collective desire for peace and harmony within society. His message is a poignant reminder of the need for accountability and compassion in leadership roles.
This commemorative event represents not only a moment of reflection but also an opportunity for the military and the broader community to learn from the past and foster a brighter, more unified future. As individuals continue to seek forgiveness and understanding, it paves the way for healing and growth within families and institutions.
