At the 24th anniversary of the attempted mutiny at Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Aporosa Rokowaqa, brother of the late CRW soldier Lagani Rokowaqa, urged senior officers of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) to embody dignity and integrity in their leadership. Representing his family, Mr. Rokowaqa emphasized that genuine change within the military must start with those in positions of power.
He quoted Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, highlighting the importance of fearing God and adhering to His commandments as a fundamental duty. He called on senior officers to rise above greed and selfishness, reminding them to think of Fiji, its heritage (Vanua), and the well-being of future generations.
Mr. Rokowaqa expressed a heartfelt request for forgiveness from the RFMF, acknowledging his brother’s involvement in the 2000 attempted mutiny. He conveyed the struggles his family faced in the aftermath, sharing poignant memories of how Lagani’s young family—a daughter just four years old at the time and a pregnant wife—had experienced significant grief.
Today’s commemoration was not only an act of remembrance but also a step towards healing for the Rokowaqa family. This event exemplifies the potential for reconciliation and progress within the military as well as broader society, encouraging a culture that prioritizes service over self-interest.
The sentiments expressed resonate with many, as they remind us of the ongoing need for accountability and compassion in leadership roles. Through these reflections, there is hope for a future where past mistakes are acknowledged and serve as a foundation for a more united and ethical community.
