A team from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is currently investigating a theft involving $5,800 stolen from Malti Devi, the 66-year-old mother of Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj. The incident took place on December 19, 2024, when Ms. Devi realized her purse was missing during a visit to CWM Hospital for medication.
Initially unaware of her loss, she discovered her purse was gone the next day while preparing for a physiotherapy appointment. Reacting quickly, Mr. Maharaj contacted Bank South Pacific to block the card linked to her purse. Unfortunately, they informed him that the card had already been used for unauthorized transactions, which included withdrawals from ATMs as well as a purchase of about $1,800 at Thirsty Liquor in Lami.
Concerned about the misuse of the card, Mr. Maharaj promptly filed a complaint at the Raiwaqa Police Station. However, he expressed frustration about what he perceived as a lack of urgency in the investigation, noting that more than two weeks had passed without significant progress. “If we are serious about national security, administrative issues like this need to be resolved, and police must be more proactive,” he stated.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. The police have secured Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage from the liquor outlet in Lami and are now waiting for approval from the bank to access ATM camera footage.
This incident emphasizes the need for swift action by law enforcement in theft cases and illustrates the importance of community cooperation. The ongoing investigation offers hope that authorities will identify the thief and recover the stolen funds, which could enhance public trust and safety. As this case unfolds, it serves as a reminder for individuals to remain vigilant with their personal belongings, and it highlights the critical role of effective police work in combating crime.
In summary, the CID’s investigation into the theft has sparked discussions regarding national security and law enforcement responsiveness, and with ongoing efforts to secure evidence, there is optimism for a resolution.
