The Ministry of Public Works is gearing up for a significant $40 million water infrastructure initiative set to launch in 2025, targeting ongoing water supply challenges in the Suva region. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau announced that the Elevated Princess Road water project has already been tendered and evaluated, pending final approval from the board in the upcoming days.

This ambitious project is expected to unfold over a span of 18 months next year, promising to enhance water delivery to the elevated areas of Suva. “The project was designed to rectify the inconsistent water supply affecting elevated neighborhoods, specifically Colo-i-Suva, Khalsa, Tacirua, and Tamavua,” Ro Filipe stated.

Key elements of the project include the construction of a new gravity pipeline stretching 1.43 kilometers from Sawani Junction to a newly established pump station at Buresasa, located between Waimanu Junction and Colo-i-Suva. Additionally, the design incorporates a rising main pipeline extending 5.27 kilometers from the pump station to the Colo-i-Suva reservoir, where a 2×5 megalitre steel tank reservoir will be built.

By shifting the supply method from a pumping system to a gravity-fed system, this project aims to enhance resilience, particularly since the Viria Water Treatment Plant can manage high turbidity events that the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant struggles with.

This initiative represents a hopeful step towards resolving the water supply issues in the region, ultimately improving the quality of life for residents and fostering sustainable development in Suva.

In summary, the $40 million water infrastructure project intends to provide a consistent water supply to high-elevation areas, marking a significant investment in the welfare and future of the Suva community.
