This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a pivotal framework aimed at promoting gender equality. As a signatory, Fiji will participate in the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) taking place at the United Nations headquarters in New York from March 10 to 21.

In preparation for the CSW meeting, a gathering of governments, civil society, and non-governmental organizations in the Asia-Pacific region took place in November. Although some progress has been made in the gender equality landscape, many challenges and gaps remain across various countries.

Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls, a prominent Pacific feminist and coordinator of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict Pacific (GPPAC), reflected on the significant collaborations and discussions that marked the inception of the declaration. She emphasized the revitalization of gender equality initiatives by Pacific Island Forum leaders in 2023 and the importance of sustained dialogue among nations.

However, Bhagwan-Rolls underscored the need for adequate financing to support gender equality efforts. She highlighted the critical role of civil society and women’s organizations in ensuring that discussions about financing are inclusive and representative.

Bhagwan-Rolls also expressed concern over gaps in educational opportunities for girls, particularly after primary school completion. She noted that while progress is being made, barriers remain, affecting women’s access to scholarships and supportive environments in their communities.

Furthermore, she pointed to alarming trends such as high rates of unplanned pregnancies among young women, urging for an examination of the underlying causes rather than merely the statistics. She reiterated the ongoing relevance of peace and security discussions, initially raised in 1995, and the ongoing struggle against violence and discrimination.

Despite the challenges faced, Bhagwan-Rolls remains hopeful, noting the resilience of gender equality movements and the emergence of new forms of organization and advocacy, including dedicated efforts for LGBTQI+ rights. She illustrated this with various collaborations, including initiatives by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre and the Pacific Conference of Churches to promote gender equality and combat violence.

Emphasizing the necessity of collaboration and intersectionality, Bhagwan-Rolls highlighted the importance of integrating diverse approaches to tackling the complex issues surrounding gender equality. She analogized the feminist movement to weaving a basket, where all strands of work come together to create a cohesive force for advocacy.

In conclusion, while the path to gender equality remains fraught with challenges, the continued commitment and perseverance of individuals and organizations signal a hopeful perseverance towards achieving meaningful change.

Overall, the ongoing discussions and actions surrounding the Beijing Declaration’s legacy demonstrate a collective determination to uplift women’s rights and gender equality in the Pacific and beyond.
