$3.83 Million Payout: How Termites Are Impacting Homes and Communities

A total of 760 homeowners affected by termite infestations have each received $5,000, while 15 individuals have been granted $3,000 as part of the Coalition Government’s assistance program for impacted families.

Sashi Kiran, co-chairperson of the Termite Taskforce, highlighted that Asian Subterranean Termites (AST) have been a problem in the country for over a decade, causing significant damage to infrastructure. She noted that property values in Lautoka have been severely impacted due to the AST infestation, which has also spread to the Northern Division and Nakasi.

To date, approximately $3.83 million has been distributed to 775 applicants. The Lautoka City Council has processed the applications, which were verified by Biosecurity of Fiji.

The Coalition Government is conducting a pilot assessment and baiting program in Lautoka, with plans to expand efforts based on insights gained from this initial phase. Kiran expressed that experiences from Lautoka will aid in evaluating the termite problem throughout the country.
