$2 Million Fight Against Destructive Termites: Is Your Home Next?

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad announced that $2 million has been allocated this financial year to combat the spread of Asian Subterranean Termites (AST).

During a parliamentary session, Prof Prasad revealed the formation of a task force aimed at supporting the government’s initiatives to assist households impacted by the AST infestation.

To provide relief to those whose homes have suffered significant damage from termites, the government is launching a ‘Termite Subsidy Programme,’ primarily targeting residents in Lautoka, Ba, Nadi, and Rakiraki.

The subsidy program will offer $5,000 to households with a combined income below $30,000, while those with an income between $30,000 and $50,000 will receive a $2,000 subsidy.

The Lautoka City Council has received 1,327 applications, with 448 verified as eligible for support, resulting in payments of $5,000 and $2,000 that total $2.2 million.

Additionally, Prof Prasad noted that 327 applications have been verified and will receive payment soon, while 160 applications are pending verification, 392 are awaiting clarification, and 54 applications were denied.

He emphasized that the long-term objective is to eradicate AST, and households receiving subsidies will also get a termite baiting system, recognized as the most effective method to address the issue.
