In the center of Levuka lies the historic Mission Hill, recognized for its 199 steps that illuminate the town’s rich past. These steps, composed of coral and limestone, have withstood the test of time and serve as a testament to the town’s history.
In the mid-19th century, Levuka was a bustling hub of activity, attracting missionaries, European traders, and settlers who laid the groundwork for future development. Among them were four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers, who arrived with the purpose of sharing their faith and educating the local population on Ovalau Island.
The missionaries selected Mission Hill as the site of their religious and educational activities, and it’s believed that the steps were constructed shortly after establishing their mission in 1858.
Luke Tikomaisiga, a 71-year-old resident of Levuka, reminisces about the iconic steps, recounting stories passed down from his family. He notes that the missionaries were committed to creating a pathway that reflected their spiritual journey, leading to the construction of the 199 steps, built by hand using local materials to showcase the craftsmanship and effort of both the missionaries and the local community.
According to Tikomaisiga, these steps represent much more than a physical pathway; they encapsulate the challenging voyage embarked upon by the missionaries to deliver the Gospel to the local population. They were designed to provide access to the Mission Hill site, where Fiji’s first Roman Catholic mission was founded.
As generations have passed, the 199 steps have come to symbolize Levuka’s unique history. Despite the change in the capital to Suva in 1882, the steps remain a reminder of the early days of Christianity in the region. Both locals and tourists climb the steps to enjoy breathtaking views while reconnecting with the town’s past. Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti emphasizes their cultural importance, as they embody Levuka’s colonial legacy and its significant role in spreading the Gospel throughout Fiji and the Pacific.
The steps have witnessed numerous pivotal moments throughout Levuka’s history, becoming a revered site where people pause to honor the town’s origins. Efforts are currently underway to maintain the steps as part of Levuka’s cultural heritage, recognizing its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside the remnants of the old Catholic mission and a historic chapel nearby.
