The government has allocated nearly $16 million to the Lagilagi Housing Estate project under the Public Rental Board (PRB), aiming to create affordable housing for low-income residents of Jittu Estate. Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, reported to Parliament that the project, which commenced in 2009, was initiated by the previous government in collaboration with the Pacific Community Network Charitable Trust (PCN) and a German Catholic organization.
Mr. Nalumisa stated that the project seeks to assist PCN in providing low-cost housing options for families in need. To date, the project has successfully completed 117 housing units, with an additional 36 units recently finishing construction under the management of PRB. The minister announced that these 36 units, accomplished within a budget of approximately $1.6 million, will soon be available for occupancy.
Mr. Nalumisa expressed appreciation for the partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, contributing to the development of recreational areas for the families residing in the new units. Combined, nearly 160 families will live in the new housing, in addition to around 1,400 families on the other side of Jittu Estate. However, space limitations have posed challenges for future construction. The PRB’s original plan for two-bedroom units has been revised due to these constraints, and discussions are ongoing to acquire more land for potential expansion.
The minister emphasized the prioritization of Jittu Estate residents for future housing opportunities in phase two of the project. Reflecting on previous irregularities related to PCN, Mr. Nalumisa assured that families affected have been refunded, and the ministry is working diligently to address grievances from those impacted by unfair practices.
PRB is also conducting surveys and investigations into tenant claims, pursuing further support for those who showed evidence of their payments. Opposition MP Premila Kumar raised concerns regarding non-eligible tenants, including reports of foreign nationals and minors owning flats. Mr. Nalumisa committed to addressing these irregularities to ensure fair housing practices.
Overall, this initiative reflects the government’s dedication to providing stable housing for low-income families, prioritizing their needs while addressing previous shortcomings. This progress holds promise for a more secure and enriched living environment for the residents of Jittu Estate.
This article highlights the government’s commitment to improving housing conditions for vulnerable communities, which is a positive development for the region. By addressing past issues and ensuring fair distribution of housing, there is hope for a more equitable future for Jittu Estate’s residents.
