$150 Million Boost: Scholarships and Support for Students Unveiled

The Coalition Government is taking significant steps to address the education-employment gap by allocating $150 million to the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS). This initiative was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during the Waidina College Golden Jubilee celebrations last week.

Professor Prasad noted that through collaborations with essential education stakeholders, the government will offer scholarships to 300 students for industry-based training, allowing them to attain a Certificate or Diploma with employers like Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom. He expressed that this opportunity will significantly benefit the 300 students, enabling them to secure employment with the companies that have trained them after completing their programs.

Additionally, the government has launched the Hardship Assistance Scheme aimed at private students who excel academically but face financial difficulties. Under this scheme, students across various educational levels, from diploma to degree programs, will receive support.

Professor Prasad further highlighted the Coalition Government’s Back-to-School Support Payment of $200 per student for families earning below $50,000. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to enhance educational support for children.

He emphasized that these new initiatives are more than just educational investments; they embody the government’s dedication to empowering individuals through education, skills development, and employment opportunities, aligning with the new National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.
