$150 Million Boost: How Scholarships Are Changing Lives in Education

The Coalition Government is making significant strides to bridge the gap between education and employment by allocating $150 million to the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS). This initiative was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Waidina College last week.

Professor Prasad emphasized that through collaboration with key educational stakeholders, the Coalition Government has been able to provide scholarships for 300 students, enabling them to receive industry-based training and earn certificates or diplomas from employers such as Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom.

“This opportunity will certainly broaden the prospects for these 300 students, allowing them to work for the employers that trained them once they complete their programs,” he stated.

Additionally, the government has rolled out the Hardship Assistance Scheme, aimed at supporting private students who excel academically but face financial difficulties due to circumstances beyond their control. “This scheme will provide assistance to students at all educational levels, from diplomas to degrees,” he noted.

Professor Prasad also mentioned the Coalition Government’s Back-to-School Support Payment, which offers $200 per student to parents with incomes below $50,000, reaffirming the government’s commitment to enhancing educational support for children.

“These new initiatives represent more than an investment in education. They reflect our government’s dedication to empowering our citizens with education, skills, and employment opportunities, which align with the objectives of the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050,” he added.
