$150 Million Boost: Government’s Game-Changer for Student Opportunities

The Coalition Government has announced a significant investment of $150 million in the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS) as part of its initiative to bridge the gap between education and employment. This announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Waidina College last week.

Professor Prasad noted that through collaborations with key education stakeholders, the government is providing scholarships to 300 students for industry-based training, allowing them to earn a Certificate or Diploma from employers such as Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom. He expressed optimism that this initiative would broaden the opportunities for these students, enabling them to secure employment with the companies that trained them after their studies.

In addition, the government has launched the Hardship Assistance Scheme aimed at supporting private students who excel academically but encounter financial difficulties due to circumstances beyond their control. This scheme will provide assistance to students at all levels, from diploma to degree programs.

Furthermore, the Coalition Government’s Back-to-School Support Payment offers $200 per student for families with incomes below $50,000, reinforcing its commitment to educational support for children.

Professor Prasad emphasized that these initiatives are not merely financial investments in education; they reflect the government’s dedication to empowering citizens with education, skills, and job opportunities, aligning with the objectives outlined in the new National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.
