$150 Million Boost for Student Opportunities: Government’s Game-Changer Initiative

The Coalition Government has announced a significant initiative to bridge the gap between education and employment by allocating $150 million to the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS). This announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Waidina College last week.

Professor Prasad indicated that through collaborations with key education stakeholders, the government will provide scholarships to 300 students, enabling them to engage in industry-based training and earn a Certificate or Diploma from employers like Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom.

“This initiative will broaden the opportunities for these 300 students, allowing them to secure employment with the companies that have trained them once they complete their programs,” he stated.

Additionally, the Government has introduced a Hardship Assistance Scheme aimed at supporting private students who excel academically but face financial challenges due to circumstances beyond their control.

“Students across all levels, from diplomas to degrees, will receive assistance through this scheme,” he explained.

Professor Prasad also highlighted the Coalition Government’s Back-to-School Support Payment, which provides $200 per student to families with incomes below $50,000, underscoring the administration’s commitment to education and the welfare of children.

“These new initiatives are more than mere investments in education,” he emphasized. “They reflect our government’s dedication to equipping our citizens with education, skills, and employment opportunities, reinforcing the objectives of the new National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.”
