The Coalition Government is investing $150 million to enhance the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS), aiming to bridge the gap between education and employment. This initiative was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during the Waidina College Golden Jubilee celebrations last week.
Prof Prasad noted that in collaboration with key educational partners, the government has secured scholarships for 300 students enabling them to engage in industry-based training and earn a Certificate or Diploma from employers like Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom. “This will significantly broaden the opportunities for these 300 students, allowing them to secure employment with the companies that provided their training after they complete their programs,” he stated.
Additionally, the government has launched the Hardship Assistance Scheme to support academically proficient private students facing financial difficulties. “Through this initiative, students at all educational levels, from diplomas to degrees, will receive necessary assistance,” he emphasized.
He also highlighted the Coalition Government’s Back-to-School Support Payment of $200 for students from families with incomes under $50,000, reinforcing the commitment to education and ensuring children receive the necessary support.
“These initiatives represent more than just financial investment in education. They underscore our government’s dedication to empowering citizens through education, skills training, and employment opportunities, aligning with the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050,” he concluded.
