$150 Million Boost: Coalition Government’s Bold Move to Bridge Education and Employment Gap

The Coalition Government has announced a significant investment of $150 million towards the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS), which aims to bridge the gap between education and employment. This initiative was emphasized by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad during the Waidina College Golden Jubilee celebrations last week.

DPM Prasad noted that the government, in collaboration with key educational partners, will provide scholarships for 300 students for industry-based training, enabling them to earn either a Certificate or Diploma through esteemed employers such as Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom. He expressed that this initiative would broaden the opportunities for these 300 students, allowing them to work with the companies that trained them upon completing their programs.

Additionally, he highlighted the introduction of the Hardship Assistance Scheme, aimed at supporting private students who excel academically but face financial difficulties through no fault of their own. The scheme will provide aid to students of all educational levels, from diplomas to degrees.

Moreover, the Coalition Government has implemented a Back-to-School Support Payment of $200 per student for families with incomes below $50,000, reinforcing its commitment to education and ensuring that children receive necessary support.

DPM Prasad stated that these initiatives represent more than just financial investment in education; they showcase the government’s dedication to equipping its citizens with education, skills, and job opportunities, all of which align with the new National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.
