$100 Million Paid, But Where’s the Development?

Despite the distribution of $100 million in premium payments to 5,000 landowning units over the last two years, the iTaukei Land Trust Board has reported minimal development within these communities. Bese Buinimasi, the TLTB regional manager for the North, indicated that this figure pertains solely to premium payments and does not include lease money.

In 2022, the total leases distributed to landowners exceeded $100 million, rising to approximately $120 million the following year. Buinimasi revealed that the board aims to distribute $130 million in leases to landowners this year.

However, he expressed concern over the lack of development in iTaukei communities, stating that they have little to show for the substantial lease amounts received annually. He emphasized the need for a change in the mindset regarding the spending of leases within these communities.

Buinimasi highlighted the unique position of the iTaukei people, noting that they own 91 percent of the land in the region, while the State controls 4 percent, with the remaining land designated as freehold.
